All insightsTOOL SELECTION

A software demo is a starting point. Here’s what to test next.

Use a demonstration to identify questions. Use an agreed evaluation to answer them. A tool should be assessed in the workflow your team intends to run.

Write three representative tasks

Choose tasks that reflect daily work, an integration challenge, and a demanding scenario. Define the input, expected output, time constraints, and what success means before the evaluation.

Bring your interfaces into scope

Check model formats, data import and export, automation APIs, version compatibility, and error handling. Where relevant, FMI supports model exchange and co-simulation; the supported version and implementation details still matter.

Look beyond a single-user license

Ask how named, floating, offline, automation, and execution licenses apply to the intended workflow. Confirm terms with the supplier and separate required options from future additions.

Measure the cost of switching

Consider test migration, model conversion, scripting changes, training, data retention, and maintenance. Record assumptions rather than presenting an uncertain migration estimate as a proven saving.

End with evidence and open questions

The output should state what worked, under which conditions, and what remains unverified. Decide whether a second test or clarification is needed before purchase.
